Key points:
  • Solid shampoos and conditioners are plastic free and cause less pollution than products in bottles

  • Shampoo and conditioner bars are often vegan friendly, made with plant based, easily biodegradable ingredients.

  • They're cost effective, on average costing between 18c and 31c per wash.

  • Conditioner bars are champion multi-taskers, helping you simplify your beauty routine

  • No matter your hair type, you'll be able to find a suitable solid shampoo and conditioner.

Have you considered swapping your favourite shampoo and conditioner for solid shampoo and conditioner bars, but are still a little hesitant to actually jump in the deep end? Let us help you take the plunge. Here are five good reasons to start using solid hair care.

1. Good for the planet

Solid shampoos and conditioners are your plastic free option. While some shampoo and conditioner bottles are now partially made with recycled plastic, solid bars don’t need to be wrapped in plastic at all - another small step in the right direction if you want to reduce your plastic use.

Because they are concentrated and contain a lot less water than bottled shampoo and conditioner (around 80% less in fact), solid hair care bars are much lighter and take up much less volume during transport, with a trickling down effect on the need for polluting trucks and planes, and therefore diminished pressure on the environment.

2. Good ingredients

Shampoo bars are invariably made with consciously sourced, plant based ingredients, such as coconut oil and hemp seed oil, and as a result are mostly vegan friendly, cruelty free, free from petrochemicals and palm oil or palm oil derivatives, while their fragrance is achieved with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances.

To cleanse and care for your hair and scalp, a shampoo needs to be slightly acidic. As opposed to soap, which is alkaline. Look for soap free (aka 'pH balanced') shampoo bars, and you can be confident that the product is really no different than your shampoo in a bottle, just more concentrated, with 80% less water.

3. Good value for money

At first glance, shampoo and conditioner bars might seem expensive: such a small product, for so much money! But don’t be fooled by their concentrated form. You’re paying for around 80% less water. Most brands will tell you you’ll get up to 80 washes from your bars.

With the average bar costing between $15 and $25, that equates to 18c to 31c per wash (double the amount to include your conditioner). Wash your hair twice a week and it’s still wayyy less than one take away hot chocolate or flat white! Not bad for a product that is better for the planet and good for your locks.

4. Good multi-tasker

Simplifying your skin and hair care routines, using multi-purpose products, is a good way of consuming less and your conditioner bar is a champion multi-tasker. You can use it as a conditioner, leave-in conditioner, shaving cream, or in-shower body moisturiser. How handy is that - especially when you’re travelling!

5. Good variety

Whether you hair is fine, curly, coloured or dry, or you have dandruff, there are pH balanced, cruelty free, vegan friendly shampoo and conditioner bars for your hair type.

As a rule, when you're using a new shampoo or conditioner and your hair doesn’t feel right, that particular product is not the one for you. Try another. Our favourite brands - NueBar, Hemp Collective and Ethique - all have samplers or minis to help you find the right product for you without spending a lot of money. Try a few and decide which one is right for you.
