Their minimal but complete Everything Skin Range is a new way of looking at skincare, with just one cream and oil that can be used on every type of skin, everywhere on the body. The products help to hydrate, protect and heal your skin and allow it to function at its optimal best.
We sat down with Yvette, the founder of The Ethical Beauty Expert, to chat a bit more about how she started her brand during the peak of the first lockdown of 2020 and why creating ethical and sustainable skincare products is so important to her.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started The Ethical Beauty Expert?
I was a beauty writer for 18 years, writing for a professional magazine and writing blog posts for cosmetic surgeons.
I decided to start my own blog so that real beauty information would be accessible to all. Beauty professionals do what they do, and they do it well, but they’re not professional writers.
While I was trying to work out what my website would look like, my husband - who is an artist blacksmith - kept burning his hands and arms while sculpting and blacksmithing We were in the first Covid lockdown 2020, and having worked with biochemists developing skincare producte, I started to mix up some healing balms for him.
Never being someone who can just leave things alone, I kept working on the products to improve them and make them lighter and easier to use.
My husband liked the creams so much he began applying them to his face and feet as well as his burned hands and arms.
His skin was looking really great and, with plenty of time on my hands, I started adding extra ingredients to the healing ointments to transform them into skincare creams and began using them myself
Next I made myself an oil cleanser which I also gave to a friend to try. She used the oil as a face moisturiser instead of a cleanser and said it was the most amazing oil she had ever used!
More people tried my creams and oils and everyone found different uses for them, as well as the ones they were designed for. Oil cleansers have been around since Ella Bache designed her Floral Oil Cleanser, but because they take more effort than just rubbing in and rinsing off, they have not been as popular as other cleansers.
It was my friends who suggested I sell the products.
And so I named them the Everything Skin Range – because they do everything!
We love that your products are cruelty free and made without nasty chemicals. Can you tell us a bit more about why creating ethical, sustainable products was important to you?
We live a sustainable life - have done for a long time - so it was just a automatic thing to only use natural, chemical free products, and to choose organic, palm oil free ingredients from responsible farmers. I didn’t even think twice about the packaging - it had to be zero waste.
Five percent or more of our monthly profits go to animal liberation organisations
I’m a dairy free vegetarian. We have our own spoilt chickens, and bees who have the most magnificent bee friendly garden. But because our bees are not parting with much of their honey or wax, and getting beeswax from other suppliers means they have to rob their bees of more wax, the idea of vegan skincare was always on the cards.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of starting The Ethical Beauty Expert?
I love that the products are helping heal people’s skin. Most of my clients have skin issues such as inflamed acne, rosacea, eczema, and sensitivity - and they love that there is a product which soothes and repairs their skin.
What does the future hold for The Ethical Beauty Expert?
I will grow the range. I want everything I make to be something which helps men and women achieve healthy skin, and is clean and affordable at the same time.
I’m not aiming for the anti-ageing cosmeceutical market - that is a specialist market. If our skin is healthy - aided by light therapy, a heathy diet, exercise and as little stress as possible - most of us can look amazing!
